As one of the most visited countries in the world, England has much to offer holidaymakers that journey to its shores. With one of the largest cities in the world, London, as its capital, England is an irresistible combination of rolling rural farm-land, historic villages and towns, and bustling urban metropolises. From the famous south coast beaches to the rural mid-lands and the moors and dales of the north, England has many different sights for visitors to take in. The remarkable stone circle at Stonehenge, the stunning cathedral at Salisbury, and the Roman remains at Bath draw tourists to the west of England, whilst the coastal towns of Dover, Brighton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Southampton are also favourites. The university towns of Cambridge and Oxford are also highlights, as is Stratford-upon-Avon (birthplace of Shakespeare), the walled town of York, and the northern city of Newcastle.
England is an easy country to get around with many large airports, good rail connections and a widespread motorway network. The largest airport is by far London Heathrow, though London Stansted, London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester International and Birmingham International are also incredibly busy. The majority of international airlines fly into one or more of these airports, with Heathrow being a major international hub. Rail connections from Europe come through the Channel Tunnel from France, with the rail network fanning out towards Scotland and Wales. Although it is a relatively small country it is best explored by car, with many of the sights popular with tourists located in more regional areas. Car hire is available from the large international brands that include Hertz, Budget, Thrifty and Avis. |
